Pairs and Triples Finals
Secretary’s Pairs Final and President’s Triples Final: Sunday 6th September
The finals of the Secretary’s Pairs and the President’s Triples were held at Blackstones Bowls Club on Sunday 6th September. The two matches were played concurrently - the Secretary’s Pairs between Oakham (Paul and Matthew Murrant) and Wittering (Ally McNaughton and James Henderson) and the President’s Triples between Stamford Town (John and Moira Holroyd and Kevin Vinter) and Wittering ( Cameron Day, Brian Greaves and Bob Warren).
After a tentative start in the Secretary’s Pairs, Wittering were 3 - 2 up after 4 ends. Wittering continued to hold the lead for the rest of the match, preventing Oakham from scoring for the next 5 ends, but scoring steadily to be 11 - 2 up after 9 ends - the half way point. Oakham tried to stage a recovery, but Wittering continued to steadily increase their lead to 17 - 8 after 17 ends. Oakham conceded the final end as they could not catch Wittering.
In the President’s Triples, Wittering had the start that bowlers have nightmares about; they dropped a 7 then a 6 in the first two ends, leaving themselves a massive mountain to climb. Stamford Town were like a well-oiled machine and after 10 ends were 25 - 4 shots ahead. It did not matter how many good bowls the Wittering team delivered, Stamford deprived them of any shots with their precision bowling. However, after the tenth end, Wittering managed to deny Stamford any shots for the next six ends, bringing the score to 25 - 16 in the 16th end. This gave Wittering an outside chance of catching Stamford if they could score a hot shot, but this was not to be. Stamford scored 3 shots in the 17th end, putting victory out of Wittering’s reach, so they conceded the final end.
Final Scores:

President’s Triples: John Holroyd, Moira Holroyd and Kevin Vinter (Stamford Town) 28 - 16 Cameron Day, Brian Greaves and Bob Warren (Wittering)
